Dog Licenses

Dog Licensing is integral to combating the spread of rabies in the State of Maine. Additionally, dog licensing fees go directly to support the Department of Animal Welfare and supporting their efforts to ensure humane treatment of animals.

All dogs 6 months and older must have a license. If you become the owner of a dog 6 months or older, the dog must be licensed within 10 days. All licenses must be renewed every year.

All dog licenses expire December 31st of each year. Dog Licensing can be done at the City Clerk's Office, online, or by mail beginning October 15th of each year.

All owners who register in-person OR show proof of their online dog registration for the 2026 season will automatically be gifted a Westbrook dog bandana for your furry friend!

Obtaining a Dog License

In order to obtain a license for your dog, the owner must present a current Rabies Certificate obtained from a veterinarian (if a valid certificate is not already on file). You will also need to bring proof that the dog is spayed or neutered, if applicable. If you have already shown proof of spay/neuter to the City Clerk's Office of this, additional proof is not necessary each year.

  • Online. You can register your dog online between October 15th and January 31st. After this period, dogs can only be registered using the mail-in option or in-person at City Hall. There are additional fees to license your dog online, as follows:
    •  Altered (Spayed/Neutered) dogs: $8.75
    • Unaltered (Non Spayed/Neutered) dogs: $13.75
  • By Mail. Download the Application Form and follow the instructions to license your dog through the mail.
  • In Person. You may obtain a dog license in person at City Hall during our normal business hours.

Cost (In Person/Mail)

  • $6 per year for a spayed/neutered dog
  • $11 per year if not spayed/neutered

Late Fee

There will be a late fee of $25 if you re-license your dog after January 31st. Failure to license your dog is considered a civil violation, subject to a court summons and a fine of up to $100.
